This is a guest post by a friend in New York. Caleb reports on a very real scene that has been going on with the support of Congressional Neocons and other members of the U.S,. power structure since the 80s. Every year they come out of hiding with their allies to harass the Iranian Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. They wear the colors of an innocent movement for peace and justice but read below to understand the disturbing truth.
Caleb Maupin: You would think that individuals claiming to be “Islamic Marxists” — former members of an illegal Zionist terrorist organization — and Republican elected officials would generally not associate with each other. However, once a year for the last decade or so, they all gather together in front of the United Nations during its General Assembly to display their insanity to the world by calling for greater hostility between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Iran Nuclear Deal, which I will henceforth refer to as the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) Iran Accord, has met and defeated it’s first Congressional Challenge. On the same day a number of organizations around the country who support peace and diplomacy called for local vigils to thank the Senate members who supported the Iran Accord and to hold up a light for more diplomatic peace negotiations in the future. Those who oppose the Iran Accord are a salty lot, many of whom are and have been avid advocates for new wars and ever more weapons sales and development throughout their careers. Warmongers and advocates for Israeli dominance in the Middle East strongly oppose the Iran Accord. Senator Gillibrand of New York broke with her old mentor, Chuck Schumer, to support the accord against the latest attack.
This is an open letter from the National Iranian American Council, a moderate, politically active group of Iranian Americans. It is signed by a number of U.S. Experts on International Relations. This is a response to a rather backhanded compliment to Islam that recently passed through my email, presented as an expression of tolerance focused on Iran. Sometimes tolerance can be misleading because it focuses on the presumed negative rather than the experience of that which is ‘other’. So, there is no room for a positive experience to develop. As has already been widely reported, the mission of the Iran Shahed Rescue Ship to Yemen was unsuccessful. Massive Saudi bombing of the Hodiedah port, and 15 hired Sudanese mercenaries with rocket launchers, made delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen impossible. The 2,500 tons of medical supplies, food, and water have been handed over to the World Food Program, because Saudi terrorism has made it impossible for us to deliver them.
In the aftermath of our ship going to Djibouti, and my subsequent return to Tehran, the Saudi bombing campaign has only increased. The total number of Yemenis now dead is estimated to be well over 4,000. The Saudi bombers, being refueled by the US air force and directed by US satellites, are specifically targeting the region of Hodiedah, where we intended to deliver the food and supplies. Aid for civilians in Houthi run areas of Yemen is forbidden.

A Message from Caleb Maupin in the Port of Djibouti
From the Port of Djibouti in North Africa, it is with great sadness and burning outrage that I announce that the voyage of the Iran Shahed Rescue Ship has concluded. We will not reach our destination at the Port of Hodiedah in Yemen to deliver humanitarian aid.
The unsuccessful conclusion of our mission is the result of only one thing: US-backed Saudi Terrorism.
Yesterday, as it appeared our arrival was imminent, the Saudi forces bombed the port of Hodiedah. They didn’t just bomb the port once, or even twice. The Saudi forces bombed the port of Hodeidah a total of eight times in a single day!
The total number of innocent dock workers, sailors, longshoremen, and bystanders killed by these eight airstrikes is still being calculated.
Furthermore, the Yemeni revolutionaries arrested 15 people yesterday, who were part of a conspiracy to attack our vessel. The plan was to attack the Iran Shahed when we arrived, and kill everyone onboard, including me.
There is talk about a Saudi inspection of the Iranian ship, “Iranian Shahed.”
Regardless of any different viewpoint in western or other media, one fact should be well observed: Iran’s government and Red Crescent Society state correctly, that the Saudis have no right whatsoever to inspect this ship and – in addition to that – consider Saudi Arabia unfit for any inspection of this humanitarian mission due to its leading role in the war against Yemen, same as the US.
UN, ICRC or other countries appointed by concerned institutions and not involved in the war against Yemen are naturally welcome on board of “Iran Shahed” for inspection.
There Will Be No Saudi Inspection Of This Ship!
A Message from Caleb Maupin onboard the “Iran Shahed” in the Gulf of Aden
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is mercilessly slaughtering people in Yemen, has absolutely no right to inspect this vessel. Neither does the United States of America or Israel. The Iranian government has
made that absolutely clear, and all of us in the delegation of peace activists from Germany, France, and the United States absolutely agree with this decision.
Let Us Help the Yemeni People!
– A Message from Caleb Maupin onboard the “Iran Shahed” Rescue Ship in the Persian Gulf
sent from Iranian escorted Red Crescent aid ship by Caleb Maupin of NYC
I have just heard what the US officials have said, and I must say that I and all the other peace activists aboard the Iran Shahed are filled with burning outrage.
Why should we drop the goods in Djibouti and let the United Nations deliver them for us? Why should we trust the United Nations, which has stood by and allowed the Saudi military to destroy Yemen and slaughter thousands of innocent people? Why should we specifically trust the United Nations Relief Works Agency, which has a history of disgusting scandals, mismanaging assistance to those in need? The United Nations cannot be trusted.
** I would like to point out that the base in Djibouti belongs to the US. The United States has been supporting the Saudi Arabian massacre in Yemen, air raids that mostl target civilians, with logistical assistance, weapons and political cover at the United Nations. The US has sent a warship to enforce the Saudi Blockade of Yemen. Sending the aid to Djibouti to hand off to US controlled ditribution would inconsistent with the motivation to provide the aid to the innocent civlians in Yemen., ~JB
About a week ago, I received an invitation to a meeting with Dr. Hassan Rouhani, the current President of Iran. I have been to 2 other meetings that Iranian President Ahmadinejad held with American peace activists and the US interfaith community, when he was in New York for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. I found those meetings, […]
I am writing regarding the posting of an interview/article on one of the peace and justice list-serves I belong to. The article is called “From Homs to Azadi Square: Iran and the Spectacle of Syria” The interview in question focuses on Iran’s role in supporting the Syrian government, and presents their interest in a very negative light. The underlying assumption […]
