This week, U.S. Mainstream Media across the spectrum ran a story that Trump is going to shift more of the drone operations to CIA control. Seems like an odd choice given that he has a noticeably bad relationship with the CIA, but I guess that could mean is his decision is just a cynical manipulation. This was at one time a point of contention. Who is responsible for the drone program? Under a great deal of political/popular pressure, Obama promised to take the CIA out of the loop – basically to give the appearance of doing something. But I doubt if he could have done more then shift the balance a little. Now, perhaps Trump has done something to shift it back. But, as David Swanson pointed out, the Air Force was flying the ‘CIA’ drones and they continue to fly them now. Trump is continuing the policy that was in place before there was a public outcry that caused Obama to take a step back. But it isn’t a new idea or practice and which brutal agency controls the drones is irrelevant to the victims.Read more
Today, President Obama, in a most undignified act, closed two Russian Diplomatic Centers and gave 35 “diplomats and their families 72 hours to get out of the country. The front page headline in the New York Times Reads Obama Strikes Back at Russia for Election Hacking. When I arrived home from work today my son was watching the MSM coverage. Loud, hysterical debate over the politics of the event, hysterical discussion of ongoing Russian interference in US internal affairs and what we should do next. What will Trump do when he takes office emanated from his room. He likes House of Cards and I wondered for a moment if they were so far ahead of the game that they somehow managed to simulate the events of the day. But no. This is our real president (for a few more weeks) and our real media (God help us).
One of the funniest bits was a commentator denouncing the dastardly Putin for continuing to interfere in US internal politics by not taking the bait and escalating the situation with a tit for tat expulsion of diplomats. The commentator was truly distressed. How dare Putin change the rules by refusing to play the game?! But he truly funniest remark was a quote from a Republican who said that we will just have to wait for Donald Trump to come to power so we can have a mature and competent president. I felt like I just fell into a rabbit hole! Alice, are you still here?Read more
Let me say this about the State of the Union. As usual President Obama is spot on when he celebrates the inherent beauty of diversity and openly rejects the sinister nature of identity/tribal politics. I also appreciate his call for American citizens to wake up and finally retake control of their nation. As he powerfully reminded us, “We the people” are the three most important words in our Constitution.
That said I am perplexed by the President’s invocation of Dr. King and his call for a nonviolent revolution based on the power of “unarmed truth and unconditional love.” These words are absolutely meaningless in light of what he said about hunting down and destroying human beings who engage in terrorism . . . . please stop summoning the name and legacy of Dr. King to endorse a worldview that advocates justified warfare. “Unarmed truth” does not mean having “the strongest military in the world. Period.”Read more
